From a Retail Icon to a Fresh Start

Let's take a stroll down memory lane and explore the intriguing tale of Eastfield Mall, a beloved shopping destination that graced Springfield, Massachusetts, for nearly 56 years. Nestled along Boston Road, this iconic mall's journey is a testament to changing tastes and the economic tides that shaped our community.

Back in 1968, Eastfield Mall opened its doors with a grand lineup of three anchor stores: Forbes & Wallace, Steiger's, and Sears. It quickly became the go-to place for Springfield locals and out-of-towners alike, providing a shopping haven. As the years rolled on, Eastfield Mall didn't shy away from change. Forbes & Wallace made way for JCPenney in 1975, and Filene's took over Steiger's spot in 1994, eventually transforming into Macy's in 2006. The mall kept pace with the times, introducing a cutting-edge 16-screen movie theater in 2000, initially run by Showcase Cinemas and later by Cinemark. But what sets this mall's story apart is its unique cast of characters. In 2006, Steve & Barry's joined the mall, bringing it to full occupancy for the first time since 1978. However, this intriguing plotline took an unexpected turn when Steve & Barry's filed for bankruptcy in 2008, making room for Hannoush Jewelers in 2009. Eastfield Mall had its share of challenges too, like the introduction of a teen escort policy in 2004 and JCPenney's transition from a mall anchor to an outlet store before ultimately closing its doors in 2011. In 2016, Macy's decided to downsize nationwide, bidding adieu to Eastfield Mall in April 2016. Sears followed suit in 2018, and in 2020, Cinemark, the beloved movie theater, shut down for good. Fast forward to April 5, 2023, when the mall announced its bittersweet farewell, with July 15, 2023, marking its final chapter.

As September dawned, demolition crews began dismantling this historic structure, signaling the end of an era. The echoes of shoppers' footsteps and the memories of bustling stores have now given way to the rhythmic sound of deconstruction. But the most exciting part lies ahead: Springfield City Council has already given the green light for the redevelopment of Eastfield Mall's property.
